Sinotruk Special-Purpose Vehicles: Tank Trucks, Sewage Suction Trucks and Lowbed Semi-Trailer Solutions

Buying a special-purpose vehicle is completely different from buying a standard cargo truck. With a tractor, you compare engine, gearbox and axle; with a special vehicle, you are buying a matched system of “chassis + body + trailer.” Choose the wrong chassis and the body will not fit; choose the wrong body and productivity suffers; mismatch the trailer and tractor and the whole combination cannot work on site.

As an authorized first-tier Sinotruk dealer with long experience in special-vehicle exports, we explain below the product features, key specifications and complete solutions for three categories: tank trucks, sewage suction trucks and lowbed semi-trailers.

1. Basic logic: confirm three matches first

Whatever the vehicle type, three matches must be confirmed before ordering, in this order.

(1) Regulatory match

Countries have different admission requirements for tank vehicles, dangerous-goods vehicles and over-dimensional transport vehicles. Tank volume, axle load, gross weight and overall dimensions that exceed local rules can make the vehicle impossible to register after arrival. For export orders, confirm the target country’s limits and certification requirements before discussing specifications.

(2) Duty match

A tank truck for urban delivery is specified very differently from one for a mining-site fuel station. A sewage suction truck for municipal cleaning differs greatly from one for industrial sludge in tank material and pump type. The duty cycle determines volume, material and working equipment.

(3) Compatibility match

A semi-trailer must match its tractor: fifth-wheel height, kingpin specification, air and electrical connections and brake system type must all be compatible. Many customers order only the trailer, then find the tractor cannot connect and have to rework. Buying the combination as a package avoids this problem.

2. Tank trucks: volume, compartments and safety equipment

(1) Volume and chassis type

Sinotruk tank trucks come in two main forms: rigid and semi-trailer. Rigid trucks are mostly 6×4, with good maneuverability for medium/short delivery from depots to filling stations; semi-trailers offer larger capacity for long-distance bulk transport.

A typical 6×4 rigid tank truck has a 20,000-liter tank, with 18,000, 22,000 or 25,000 liters available. Semi-trailer tankers can reach 45,000 liters with about 6% expansion space for temperature changes, and 54,000-liter versions are also available.

(2) Tank structure and safety equipment

The tank is the core of a tank truck. A common specification is 5 mm shell, 6 mm front/rear heads and 4 mm internal baffles. Baffles reduce liquid surge while driving and lower rollover risk. Compartment number depends on the products carried: one product can use a single compartment; multiple products require multiple compartments, commonly three and up to six or seven.

Safety equipment is essential: each compartment should have an aluminum-alloy explosion-proof manhole cover and a bottom discharge valve, with API-standard quick couplings at the discharge. These directly affect loading/unloading efficiency and transport compliance and should be confirmed as standard, not options.

(3) Selection advice

For urban delivery on narrow roads, prefer a 6×4 rigid truck with 18,000–20,000 L, balancing maneuverability and payload. For long-distance depot-to-remote-station transport, prefer a semi-trailer with larger volume per trip and lower unit transport cost. For a single product, reduce compartments and tare weight; for multiple products, add compartments but reduce per-compartment volume to avoid exceeding gross weight.

3. Sewage suction trucks: tank volume, vacuum pump and tank material

(1) Tank volume and chassis

Productivity depends on the combination of tank volume and pump suction capability. A 4×2 chassis commonly carries 7–10 m³, suitable for daily cleaning of urban communities and streets. A 6×4 chassis can carry 20 m³ effective volume, with 15, 18, 22 or 25 m³ available, suitable for large municipal cleaning programs and industrial sludge transfer.

(2) Vacuum pump: the core of productivity

The vacuum pump is the most important component, directly determining suction depth and cycle time. There are two common choices: Italian-brand MORO, JUROP and BP pumps with stable performance and high suction efficiency; or Chinese WEILONG and YIFENG pumps with lower parts cost and easier repair.

For a 10 m³ model, suction depth is about 6 m, a suction cycle about 8 minutes, and the suction hose diameter 100 mm. In high-solids or long-distance suction conditions, choose a high-flow pump and a larger hose; otherwise the pump may run without lifting the material.

(3) Tank material and workmanship

Tanks are normally 6–8 mm carbon steel, cylindrical and fully welded, with internal anti-corrosion epoxy coating and external reinforcing ribs. For highly corrosive media such as industrial waste liquid or acid/alkali sludge, use a 304 stainless steel tank. A wrong material choice is expensive: a carbon steel tank handling strong corrosives often leaks within one or two years.

(4) Combination vs single-function truck

If the business includes both sludge suction and high-pressure pipe cleaning, choose a combined cleaning-and-suction truck: one tank divided into wastewater and clean-water compartments, with a high-pressure plunger pump and hose reel. One truck performs both operations, reducing fleet size and staffing. If only suction is required, a single-function truck is more economical, lighter and offers more tank volume.

4. Lowbed semi-trailers: capacity, axles and tractor matching

(1) Capacity and dimensions

The core specification is load capacity. Sinotruk lowbed semi-trailers commonly carry 60–100 t, with tare weight around 9–13 t and common dimensions of 16000×3500 mm. They are suitable for excavators, loaders, bulldozers, rollers and other construction machinery, as well as transformers and wind-power components.

(2) Axle configuration

Common axles are 13 t and 16 t class, with 3 or 4 axles. More axles increase capacity and reduce ground pressure, but also increase tare weight and turning radius. Select axles and axle load from the heaviest cargo weight, leaving 10%–15% margin; do not use the rated value to its limit.

(3) Matching the tractor

A lowbed semi-trailer must be specified together with its tractor. First, the tractor’s fifth-wheel capacity must match the trailer’s gross weight. Second, kingpin specification and fifth-wheel locking type must match. Third, air and electrical connection quantities and positions must align. Fourth, brake system type must be common; otherwise trailer brake response may lag.

For excavator transport, also consider ramp angle and platform height above ground. A ramp that is too steep prevents the machine from climbing; a platform that is too high raises the center of gravity and affects stability. Confirm these details when ordering.

5. Three complete package solutions

The following complete configurations cover three common business scenarios and can serve as a basis for quotation and selection.

SolutionBusiness scenarioRecommended configuration
Solution 1: Refined-oil distributionRegional delivery from depot to filling stations6×4 tank truck + 20,000 L three-compartment tank + API discharge valve + aluminum explosion-proof manholes
Solution 2: Municipal sanitationMunicipal cleaning and pipe unblocking6×4 combined cleaning/suction truck + 20 m³ tank + imported vacuum pump + high-pressure cleaning equipment
Solution 3: Construction machinery transportRegional transfer of excavators and loaders6×4 tractor + 4-axle lowbed semi-trailer (80 t class) + matched fifth wheel and connections

Package procurement is not only simpler: chassis, body and trailer are matched under one technical solution, interfaces are correct the first time, delivery is controllable, and after-sales responsibility has a single owner—no coordination among multiple suppliers when a problem occurs.

6. Five key points for export delivery

  1. Emission standard: confirm the emission level allowed in the target country; Euro II to Euro V configurations are available. Do not order according to domestic habits.
  2. Steering configuration: for right-hand-drive countries, lock the right-hand-drive chassis in advance; conversion is costly and slow, so specify it in the contract.
  3. Regulatory limits and certification: tank volume, axle load, gross weight and dimensions must meet target-country requirements; for CE, ADR or other certification, confirm the lead time in advance.
  4. Shipping method: complete vehicles usually ship by RoRo or flat rack; semi-trailers are often disassembled into containers; tanks are over-dimensional and require early shipping and lashing plans.
  5. Parts and after-sales: for wear parts such as vacuum pumps, seals and discharge valves, carry a spare set to avoid downtime waiting for parts.

7. Frequently asked questions

(1) Can the tank wall be made thinner?

Not recommended. Wall thickness directly affects tank strength and safety. Reducing it lowers tare weight and increases payload but sacrifices impact resistance. If target-country regulations allow and weight reduction is genuinely needed, a qualified tank manufacturer should provide a strength calculation—not a rule-of-thumb reduction.

(2) Should the sewage truck use an imported or domestic vacuum pump?

Consider duty intensity and parts supply. For continuous high-intensity work with high efficiency requirements, choose an imported pump. For moderate duty and difficult local access to imported parts, a domestic pump is more practical, with lower repair cost and shorter waiting time.

(3) Can one lowbed semi-trailer handle multiple cargo types?

Yes, but with trade-offs. A longer platform and more axles improve versatility but increase tare weight, fuel consumption and turning radius. Specify the trailer for the main cargo type and solve occasional over-dimensional loads with temporary arrangements; do not make 90% of daily transport carry redundant cost for 10% of extreme cases.

Conclusion

The logic of special-vehicle selection is essentially aligning three things: regulations, duty cycle and compatibility. For tank trucks, focus on volume and safety equipment; for sewage suction trucks, on tank volume and pump matching; for lowbed semi-trailers, on capacity and tractor compatibility. In all three, “bigger” is not automatically better—only “matched” is.
